SWF STATEMENT ON CAIRNGORMS NATIONAL PARK WILDFIRE

The Scottish Wildfire Forum (SWF) has commented on the wildfire that covered more than 3,300ha at Abernethy and Glenmore in recent weeks, recognising the exceptional efforts of everyone involved in responding to this challenging and prolonged incident which has damaged a beautiful natural environment and threatened homes and businesses.

We extend our sincere thanks to the firefighters, emergency responders, land managers, gamekeepers, local authority colleagues, community representatives, voluntary organisations and partner agencies who worked tirelessly and collaboratively to bring the incident under control, protect people and property, and support the affected area.

The response to this wildfire demonstrated the importance of strong partnership working. The SWF also recognises the patience, understanding and resilience shown by local communities, businesses and visitors while restrictions, operational activity and recovery arrangements were in place. We are extremely grateful for the huge community spirit shown by so many people.

As with all significant wildfire incidents, there will be important lessons to identify and learn. The SWF remains committed to working collaboratively with a wide range of public and private sector organisations as well as other stakeholders to reduce wildfire risk, strengthen community resilience and improve Scotland’s collective readiness for future wildfire events.

The Scottish Wildfire Forum is a multi-agency, multi-interest association with 23 members, established in 2004, chaired by SFRS, with the main aims of:

• minimising the number of wildfires in Scotland

• lessening the harmful impacts of wildfire in Scotland

The Scottish Wildfire Forum has representation from SFRS, agencies, rural trade associations, Scottish Environment Link, emergency planners, utility companies, and communities. It is currently developing an Integrated Fire Management framework.
